228 Massachusetts

What with Extreme Makeover being in Buffalo and all, I decided to drive on over that way to at least gawk from a distance. True as advertised, Massachusetts was blocked at West Avenue with no vehicle or foot traffic allowed. This caused one woman to complain loudly that it was "stupid" and so on.

Having had far too much coffee in my system to keep my mouth shut, I brought up the point that the street closures had been all over the news, and suggested that maybe she should volunteer if she wanted to get closer. Her response to that was "Oh no, I don't want to DO anything, I just want to see Ty". (Sigh) But then again, I wouldn't have minded seeing him either. Apparently he was filming in front of City Hall at the time.

After hearing a police officer direct a relative of a local resident to 14th Street (who somehow got in the first picture - he must have cut through yards), I drove over that way. Huh. The bar known as The Ram on the corner of 14th and Rhode Island is completely demolished, maybe been that way a while. I used to frequent it when I lived nearby many years ago, while waiting for the space heater to warm up the apartment. Good excuse.

Anyway, 14th Street proved to be the ticket. After taking one picture from a distance an officer mentioned that I could walk all the way down to 228 Massachusetts as long as I stayed on the sidewalk opposite the house. Cool.

Buffalo ReUse was in action at the time, carrying out doors and dismantling windows and the like. I kind of like the porch and wonder if they'll reuse it there. Maybe it depends on how attached the family is to it. I'm assuming most the problems with the house are within.

Some of the workers assembled didn't have their jobs yet and standing around, some taking pictures of each other and everything else. The official cameras were evident also.

There weren't as many fellow gawkers at that point, around noon, as I would have thought. Maybe the pace picked up later in the day as people overlooked their apprehension of the big bad city to watch live televison shots...And of course, look for Ty :)

Most than likely, I'll be back...

I was delighted to hear that Buffalo ReUse got to get in and retrieve items prior to demolition.

Great shots Becky, much better than what we can see on the news. terry
